If not paid in advance, the recommended gratuity value will be added to passengers’ onboard account during their cruise “as a convenience,” Carnival added in the letter. According to a letter sent to booked guests, the gratuities for both standard staterooms and suites will be increased by $1.50. You might be wondering how you can get out of paying these cruise service charges. That is to keep an eye on your cruise planner and email for special promotions. Other luxury cruise lines like Silversea, Seabourn, and Regent include all gratuities except on spa services.

Gratuities are tips for the service your receive from Carnival Cruise ship staff. I always pay them in advance, because it helps me to budget for my Carnival cruise vacation easier. With that, since March 2020, thousands of crew members were forced to remain at home for months on end, living off their hard-earned savings. A slight increase of $0.51 goes a long way for the hardworking crew members onboard.

For Carnival Cruise confirmation messages, this is classified as a ‘miscellaneous charge’, and will be indicated in your cruise documents. Prepaid gratuities will be honored, the company said, with passengers being able to secure the current rates if they pay the fees online before April 1. Guests are usually charged automatically for these additional fees. And unfortunately, most contemporary cruise lines have increased or plan to increase these charges in 2023.
CRUISE HIVE NEWSLETTER
Carnival Cruise Line has sent out a communication to guests on upcoming sailings that cruise gratuities will increase on departures on or after May 1, 2022. It is the first time the cruise line has raised the gratuity guidelines since December 1, 2018. A 20% gratuity will still be automatically added to all beverages, mini bar purchases, spa and salon services. Though, guests will not pay gratuity for drinks that are part of the complimentary classic beverage package. One major benefit of pre-paying your cruise gratuities is that you will pay the current rate.

About Our Tips and RECOMMENDATIONS
Carnival had last adjusted the value of the recommended daily gratuities in April 2022. “Our shipboard team members work hard to provide exceptional and friendly service, so we hope you will agree that this slight increase is well deserved,” Carnival stated. Carnival Cruise Line is adjusting gratuity levels for all of its U.S. and European cruises, raising the values of the recommended daily crew tips starting on April 1, 2023. In addition, when purchasing beverages, an automatic 18% gratuity is added to the bill, while an automatic gratuity of 15% is added to the Chef’s Table’s cover charge. Know the charges, who gets them, and how to pay for a hassle-free cruise. On the heels of Norwegian Cruise Line increasing its daily gratuities by 20 percent, Carnival Cruise Line is the latest cruise operator to institute a hike.
Despite paying hundreds of dollars in tips on a cruise, you might be surprised that there are other places where you will see gratuity charges or are expected to tip. In the old days, passengers would put cash into envelopes and hand them out to staff at the end of the cruise. While that’s been replaced with automatic charges, if there is someone you’d like to recognize, then slipping them cash is a good way to do it. It’s not required, but the staff member will certainly appreciate the extra money. In general, we’d suggest not changing the amount charged by the cruise line.
Tipping on a Carnival Cruise is a standard practice to show appreciation for the exceptional service provided by the crew. The cruise line has a recommended gratuity amount per person, per day, which can be adjusted according to individual preferences. These gratuities cover various staff members, including dining room waiters, cabin stewards, and other team members who work behind the scenes to ensure a memorable experience.

To ensure your gratuities are distributed fairly, it is recommended to follow Carnival’s guidelines for the automatic gratuity charges. However, if you feel that the service has not met your expectations, it is appropriate to address your concerns with guest services during your cruise. Cruise gratuities are services charges that are not included in a standard cruise fare on most contemporary cruise lines, similar to a hotel resort fee. These additional fees are a per person, per day dollar amount that are charged to all guests across all stateroom categories. If you are new to cruising, you should know that not everything is included in your cruise vacation.
This ensures that the staff can promptly and appropriately address any concerns you may have. Similar to Celebrity Cruises, Princess cruises offers more all-inclusive packages that include crew appreciation. If guests upgrade to the Princess Plus or Princess Premier Packages, they will not pay any additional gratuities once onboard the ship. There is an additional 20% gratuity for all spa and salon services.
According to Carnival Cruise Line’s tipping policy, passengers are recommended to tip their waiter around $6.10 to $9.15 per day, per person, based on the traditional dining service. For a 7-day cruise, this amounts to approximately $42.70 to $64.05 per person. It is important to note that this recommended amount can be adjusted according to your satisfaction with the service provided.
Get in touch with guest services right away so they can make adjustments. Do note that if Carnival does not receive a request for modification, the recommended rate is what will be charged to you. While the recommended tipping amounts provided by Carnival Cruise Lines serve as a useful guideline, it is always important to consider the quality of service you have received. If a crew member has gone above and beyond to ensure your satisfaction, it is appropriate to show your appreciation by offering a higher gratuity.
Others tip their room service or waitstaff at their favorite bar, either early in the cruise in the hope of getting better service or at the end to thank them for enhancing the vacation experience. How much to tip extra on a cruise is entirely up to you because it is in no way required. That said, if you want to, you can often adjust the charges (either up or down) while you're on board by visiting the guest relations desk.
Yes, you have the flexibility to adjust the gratuity charge during your Carnival cruise. If you feel that the service provided by the crew members deserves a modification in gratuity, you can discuss it with the guest services onboard. Cruise lines say they pass the money collected from service charges to the shipboard crew. They say the money is shared not just with front-of-house crew, such as room attendants and waitstaff, but also with behind-the-scenes workers.
